Dear Younger Me

That's me aged 6, chillin' on a Harley Davidson, as you do. Look how long and pretty my hair was! I guess this post is directed at her, that adorable, little blonde angel.

Dear Sarah,

You're a kid, you don't have a care in the world, your family is loving and nurturing (even Darren, he'll always be your best friend and your worst enemy, it's what siblings do), you have everything you could ever wish for. You have a great childhood, you're raised by three of the greatest people ever, and at twelve a crazy man with a funny accent enters your life and makes it even better. These are your people, they'll always be there for you no matter how hard it gets. Never underestimate their love for you.

Your teenage years are rough, you shed a lot of tears and deal with a hell of a lot of pain, physical and emotional. You'll spend a lot of time in hospital, you'll spend a lot of time thinking you've lost your mind, but you have no idea how strong it'll make you. Everything that happens, every choice you make, every person you meet, will shape you.

I can't tell you that it gets easier, there's a lot of things you have to learn to accept, and loss so unimaginable your heart will never heal from, but there's brightness. You meet your best friend at high school, and fifteen years later, he's still your bestie. You go to university, not at the time you planned, but you go and you do amazingly. At 25 your nephew is born, he's the sunshine on your dark days and you don't think you could love anyone else like you love him. Then there's a bearded boy who makes your eyes smile and you're happy.

You probably think at 29 I have a proper adult life; I'm not married and I don't have any children, you'll find out why as you grow up. Don't give yourself a hard time trying to fit the mould and try not to dwell on negativity. You, my little self, are a fighter.

Good luck.

Sarah x

PS. Be nicer to your brother.

PPS. Don't get that tattoo on your neck.

  4. I always love reading these kinds of posts, we're never as kind to ourselves as we should be when we're younger!

(The 'don't get that neck tattoo' bit made me giggle!)
